Our Company

As a partner in the Government's ultra-fast broadband initiative, Enable is set to become the primary provider of world-class fibre broadband linking the Christchurch community and local businesses with each other and the world.

Enable was launched in 2007 as a fully owned subsidiary of Christchurch City Holdings Limited (CCHL) - the investment arm of the Christchurch City Council.

Initially launched as Christchurch City Networks Limited, the company designed and rapidly constructed a fibre network utilising the best local contractors and world-leading technology. Strong support from business customers and channel partners ensured the network expanded and delivered commercial solutions from day one.

The company re-branded as Enable Networks to reflect it key objective of "enabling" local businesses to deliver or receive innovative services over a fibre based infrastructure.

In 2009, Enable also recognised the opportunity for a local company to own Christchurch's future residential broadband infrastructure by participating in the Government's ultra-fast broadband (UFB) initiative. In May 2011, Enable was selected to partner with the Government to build this exciting new fibre network.

This resulted in the creation of a new joint venture between the company and the Government, Enable Networks Limited. The documents that govern this partnership with the Crown are:

  1. The Shareholders Agreement
  2. The Network Infrastructure Project Agreement
  3. The Network Infrastructure Assets Transfer Agreement

As required by the Telecommunications Act 2001, Enable Networks Limited has entered into a Deed of Open Access Undertakings for Fibre Services in favour of the Crown. The purpose of the Deed is to promote market competition in telecommunications.

Today, Enable has over 350km of fibre optic cable and works with over 30 retail service providers to deliver fibre broadband services to hundreds of business locations, government organisations and schools.

Once completed, the multi-million dollar UFB project will grow Enable's network to over 3,500km delivering services to up to 182,000 homes and commerical premises across Christchurch and in the surrounding centres of Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Woodend, Lincoln, Prebbleton and Rolleston. This world-class fibre broadband network will be a key enabler of business and social growth in our community.
