EnableSCHOOLS opens a new world of opportunity for Christchurch teachers and students by transforming the way IT is delivered to our schools
The EnableSCHOOLS network will transform how Christchurch students learn, connecting them to a new world of educational potential and allowing schools to access new teaching, IT and administrative resources at incredible speed. The network will provide virtually unlimited bandwidth to allow schools to:
- Effectively access and share content with other schools
- Participate in real time video conferencing and virtual classrooms
- Access innovative education, IT and communications service providers
- Connect securely to the Internet at speeds exceeding 100Mbps

The EnableSCHOOLS fibre network is designed to become the city’s technology infrastructure for education. It will ultimately connect all Christchurch schools to each other, to the rest of New Zealand – and very importantly – to key providers of education resources and operational services.
The connection will operate up to 1,000 times faster than current networks, providing secure access to very high speed Internet and IP voice services, and delivering a range of services over a single fibre connection.
The network will allow schools to share technology and teaching resources, while cutting the costs of expensive IT solutions, including file management, storage, email servers, security and computer network operation.
EnableSCHOOLS has the support of the Primary, Intermediate and Secondary schools Principals associations as well as the Ministry of Education and key educational institutes.

How can your school connect?
Many schools are already close to the fibre network, and over time Enable Networks will expand to reach most of the 160 schools in Christchurch.

Will it cost more than your current communications services?
The EnableSCHOOLS network has the potential to deliver vastly improved IT services that can be a key enabler of improved learning outcomes for students. We understand, however, that schools have limited operational budgets so we are partnering with service providers to deliver packages of services that will minimise cost as much as possible.
For some schools, costs may actually reduce for your existing high-speed Internet connection. It will also be possible to shift your existing telephone lines and calling onto an IP service that can be delivered over the high speed fibre resulting in a reduction in your telephone access and calling costs.
There is also great potential to gain efficiencies and reduce your total costs by outsourcing some areas of your IT hardware and support to key service providers on the EnableSCHOOLS Network.
Where has the idea come from?
One of the goals of Enable Networks is to deliver services that improve our community, and support its future. Transforming the learning environment for our students is a vital part of this. The EnableSCHOOLS initiative has evolved from discussions with Core Education, Christchurch schools, IT Clusters, Canterbury Development Corporation and the Ministries of Education and Economic Development.
